20,000 hand-crafted moths will create an immersive display at COP26, the UN climate change conference. Made by people all over the world, the moths will represent a creative call for urgent action on climate change.
People who want their voices to be heard will record whispers of hope and encouragement for a green energy future. Visitors will listen to them as they walk through the installation at Glasgow Botanic Gardens.
‘Moths to a Flame’ is run by the Exeter-based Art and Energy Collective in partnership with Plymouth Energy Community and Exeter Community Energy. Participants across the South West, nationally and internationally are creating moths and recording their messages as part of the project.
Groups from Devon to Australia have made almost 7000 moths so far. We invite you to create your own moths to be part of the installation.

Please invite your friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, local school or community to make a moth and share their message for the Moths to a Flame project.
To make a moth for the installation, all you will need is a milk bottle, a marker pen and a pair of scissors, plus a downloadable template if you want it! It takes between 10 and 45 minutes to make a moth and is a great social activity. You can see filmed instructions here.

We will display a temporary exhibition of moths made by people in Exeter on Bampfylde Walk in the city centre from the 3rd to the 22nd of October before their final flight to Glasgow.
You can also join us at one of a number of public drop in events in the city:

- Heavitree Fun Day – 11 – 6pm Saturday 18th Sep

The Moths to a Flame project explores our relationship with energy and is delivered in partnership with community energy groups across the UK. We all rely on energy for warmth and electricity, but it comes with costs. One cost is financial – some people can’t afford to pay for the energy they need. The other cost is environmental.
