The smiling face of new ECOE director Martin ShawECOE tackles climate change while reducing electricity bills, a winning formula that is attractive to our members and volunteers alike. When we get a new director, we like to keep you updated. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce our newest director, Martin Shaw. Read on to find out more about him!

What is your background?

I completed a BSc (Hons) in Physics at Imperial College, London before moving back home to Devon, where I started work for the NHS. After a number of years and nearly as many roles I moved into the software industry. Since then I have travelled around the world working on software that serves customers across all industries and in a number of countries. My main focuses have been the HR, operations, and corporate governance functions of customers in the healthcare and manufacturing sectors. With the exception of a couple of years when I delivered management and leadership training, since joining the software industry I have always worked with customers and now lead the customer facing teams working with the HR and Operations functions of our customers. Three years ago I was asked to become the chair of the employee Green Network that holds the business to account for its sustainability commitments. I am currently studying for an MBA at the University of Exeter.

What motivated you to join ECOE?

I have been an electric vehicle (EV) and green tech geek since university and wanted to do my bit to combat climate change. One of the key mechanisms that will unlock reductions in greenhouse gas emissions is the move to renewable energy sources, and decentralising energy generation will also put more power in the hands of the consumer to decrease the impact of their own activities. The green revolution is going to support local organisations and individuals to drive down their energy costs and their impact, I wanted to support people to make that change in my part of the world.

What should members and supporters talk to you about if they bump into you?

I really am an EV and green tech geek so I am always keen to have conversations about that! I have been an EV driver for many years so if you want to know anything about owning an EV I am always happy to talk. I used to play rugby and have been a rugby fan for years. Although I haven’t had as much time as I would like to follow it recently, I am an Exeter Chiefs and England fan. I also try to keep up with football – as I was born in Wolverhampton I should be a Wolves fan, but I was brought up on Manchester United so they are my team. I am always happy to talk about software and technology, after all that is what I spend most of my working days thinking about! Last but not least, my wife is a wildlife gardener and she has led me to develop a passion for birdwatching, wildlife and nature so I always love to talk about that too.
