Stronger Exeter

Making the case for community energy to Exeter City Council

We think it’s really important for us all to take part in a major public consultation called Stronger Exeter on council services and the need to reduce spending in line with on-going reductions in funding.

This is a fantastic opportunity for people to play a part in deciding what the council’s priorities should be in this challenging climate. The consultation is split into four surveys, and the second (Helping People) presents a great opportunity to tell them how important community energy can be in addressing the issue.

The council wants communities to play a more active role in creating community resilience. Councillor Rob Hannaford said

There has to be an emphasis on self-reliance and personal responsibility. With reducing funding … people will need to be more self reliant enabling the public sector to concentrate its limited resources.

We believe there is a significant opportunity for the Council to work closely with community groups to help deliver its services and reduce the impact of budget cuts. By supporting our Solar PV1 project, they can help us lay the foundations for a range of energy efficiency and fuel poverty projects, as well as further renewable energy projects that help reduce our community’s energy bills.

For this reason, we have completed the Helping People Survey and on the final question (no.9) we said that we would like Exeter City Council to:

(a) Lease a large scale roof to Exeter Community Energy for its first solar project

and

(b) Work closely with them to develop future community based renewable energy and retrofit projects.

Please take the survey by clicking here and if you agree with us on these two points, make sure you include them in your answer to question 9.
