Green Open Homes

GreenOpenHomes_A5_newsletter_graphic-640People across Exeter and the surrounding areas are inviting the public to come and visit their green homes to see first-hand how to make energy improvements and reduce their energy bills. Come and be inspired by their achievments.

We’ve got over 20 homes taking part with a range of technologies, a good geographical spread and lots of different types of property included. We’ve got converted bungalows with air source heat pumps, terraced houses with solar pv, newly built Passivhaus homes, and some really impressive non domestic buildings too.

We’ve got homes taking part in Exeter, Crediton (partnering with Sustainable Crediton), Teignmouth (partnering with Teign Estuary Transition), and other places too. The map below shows you all of the locations.

Click on the square in the right-hand top corner of the map for full screen version. This makes the interactive map much easier to use. Click on marker on map or any home in the list for more details of each green home (or go to the full BCEW programme)

1. Montgomery School
Redvers Road, Exeter, EX4 1BS

Europe’s first truly zero carbon school, built to certified passivhaus standards in 2011 for 450 pupils, powered entirely by their rooftop solar array and with intelligent design and heating controls. Chris Rea from NPS, the designers of the school will take you round and explain all of the features.

2. Seven year old single storey eco-house
St Davids, Exeter
Jilly and Robert Edwards’ house is a single storey eco-house built seven years ago, since fitted with solar PV and a studio in the garden built to the same high specification of insulation. It also features solar thermal, under floor heating and a wood burning stove, a sedum roof on the studio and water butts, which keep the garden going. They’re also making cakes for you!

3. 1929 three-bed retrofitted semi with loft conversion
Exwick
Emma Welton’s home has been fitted with cavity wall and roof insulation, a wood burning stove, solar PV, grey water system and double glazing. She also has plans for more work in the future and can offer advice on her experiences.
